Kansas City Chiefs Ryan Sims Spreads Some HOPE to Cancer Patients

On Tuesday, November 14, 2006, Kansas City Chiefs Defensive Tackle Ryan Sims made a special guest appearance at the American Cancer Society’s Kansas City Hope Lodge, which serves as a home away from home for many cancer patients. The Hope Lodge offers free lodging for adult cancer patients and their families, eliminating the need to travel long distances for treatment. Ryan intimately addressed residents, entertained questions about his foundation’s commitment to raising awareness about cancer, and signed autographs.

“I had several patients come up to me and say that they were inspired, that Ryan was so nice and ‘normal’, and that it was an awesome event! One lady who was spending her first night in the Hope Lodge for colon cancer treatment even cried and said how awesome it was to have someone that interested in her story,” stated Carla Kath, Director of Regional Communications-KC Metro of American Cancer Society-High Plains Division.

Ryan Sims founded the Ryan Sims Foundation in 2006 in honor of a close family member who was diagnosed with colon cancer and subsequently underwent chemotherapy treatment to successfully combat the disease. The mission of the Ryan Sims Foundation is to support the fight against cancer and raise awareness about prevention, treatment, and survival.

“I enjoyed visiting with the residents of the Hope Lodge,” said Ryan Sims. “The experience further solidified by commitment to the fight against cancer and my interest in supporting grassroots and community projects that are directly benefiting cancer patients.”
